James Braxton Forrester1
M, b. circa 1820, d. 8 August 1907
James Braxton Forrester was born circa 1820 in North Carolina. He was the son of David Forrester and Christina Tucker.2
During the Civil War, James Braxton Forrester enlisted in Company K "Blount Guards" 19th Alabama Infantry on 14 August 1861 in Blountsville, Blount County, Alabama. He enlisted as a private and was wounded in the right leg below the knee at Chickamauga, Georgia on 19 Sep 1863 and hospitalized at Missionary Ridge in Chattanooga. Since he was given little chance to live they did not give him anything to eat. Realizing that he would die without food he dragged himself to the cook's tent for some cornbread. Driven by the will to live and his meager ration of food, James eventually recovered. Family tradition is that the Yankee minie ball remained in his leg until he died. He was discharged from the army in November 1863.
He applied for a pension on 24 May 1893 in Jefferson County, stating that he had been residing there since at least February 1891 and had been a farmer. In 1897 and 1899 he gives his post office address as Wylam, Alabama. In 1899 he stated that he was 79-years-old.
