Willis LANGSTON1
M, b. circa 1816, d. 6 February 1865
Willis LANGSTON, son of Isaac Newton LANGSTON and Sarah PATTON, was born circa 1816 in North Alabama.1
Willis married Ina Louisa Woolley on 29 October 1837 in Bibb County, Alabama.1
Willis LANGSTON and Ina Louisa Woolley joined the Antioch Baptist Church, Bibb County, Alabama, November 1837 by baptism. Before that, Willis was in Monroe County, Alabama where he appeared in the household of his father, Isaac Langston.
Willis LANGSTON moved from Bibb County to Jemison, Shelby County, Alabama, April 1855 when on the Saturday before the 4th Sabbath Bro. Willis Langston and his wife called for letters of dismission from Antioch Baptist Church. They moved to approximately three miles northeast of what is now the town of Jemison, which was then part of Shelby County. The family tradition holds that Willis had a falling out with the other members of his family over the question of slavery.
Willis LANGSTON died on 6 February 1865 in Shelby County, Alabama. Willis and his son, Andrew Jackson Langston, were killed by the Blackwell Crowd who operated out of Montevallo, Shelby County near the end of the Civil War. Family tradition is that they were hung. The following account appears in the book [ITALl:]Chilton County and Her People by T. E. Wyatt, 1950: "A total of 17 men in Chilton County were killed by the Blackwell Crowd immediately following the close of the War; most were from the northern part of the county. The Blackwell Crowd were secessionists to the nth degree; they rounded up men who were supposed to have been Union sympathizers during the war. Men whose brutal deaths are charged to the Blackwell Crowd included: Charlie Cobb, Jonathan Huckabee of Union Grove, Willis and Jack Langston of Dry Valley, Mart McDaniel, Thames Lowery, and Anderson Honeycutt." There must have been more to the story because Andrew Jackson Langston served with the Confederacy. In 1864, Andrew married Martha E. Cobb, a sister to Jim Cobb, who was supposed to be a member of the Blackwell Crowd. She was also the sister of Charlie Cobb who was killed by the Blackwell Crowd.1
Willis LANGSTON was buried in Mount New Hope Cemetery, Jemison, Alabama.
